Household and agricultural waste collection events coming soon

Do you have old cleaners, paint, pesticides, or other chemicals piling up in your basement, garage, or farm shed? Perhaps you suspect they are potentially dangerous to keep around, but you’re not sure of how to dispose of them safely? If so, then you won’t want to miss the upcoming household and agricultural hazardous waste collection events on Saturday, April 12 in Seward and David City.

These events, hosted by the Upper Big Blue Natural Resources District and Four Corners Health Department, are funded through grants from the Nebraska Environmental Trust and the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy. There is no cost to individuals to drop off materials and people from any county in the Upper Big Blue NRD area or Four Corners Health Department counties may participate.

The event in Seward will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at the City of Seward storage lot (880 S Columbia). The event in David City will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Butler County Fairgrounds (62 L Street, North Entrance).

Please have your items in boxes, with your paint in one box and all other materials in a separate box. If you are not sure what something is, keep it away from other materials in a separate box.

Items accepted at these events include acids, antifreeze, banned materials (including chlordane, DDT, ect.), cyanide, yard fertilizers, flammables, gasoline and oil (in small quantities) mercury, paint/stain/varnish, poisons, pesticides, fluorescent bulbs, lead acid batteries, and farm chemicals (in quantities less than 150 pounds or 55 gallons). This is for residential waste disposal only, not commercial or industrial waste.

Items that will not be accepted are tires, commercial waste, electronics, medical sharps, DEA controlled substances, empty or dried out paint cans, recyclables, biohazards, and radioactive materials.

At the event in Seward, additional items will be accepted including furniture, electronics, scrap metal and appliances, as part of Seward Clean Up Day. However, some of these materials may have a cost associated with their disposal. Please check with the City of Seward regarding the specifics of this event.
