Project GROW Winter Workshop to be held Dec. 7

Now in its fifth year, the annual Project GROW Winter Workshop, hosted by the Upper Big Blue Natural Resources District, is going to look a little different this year. Rather than a narrow focus on soil health offered over the better part of a day, this year’s workshop will offer breakout sessions on a variety of agronomic topics and the program will be offered at two times (a morning and afternoon session option), to better suit participants’ schedules.

“We hope that the flexible format this year makes it so that more people can come out and hear our speakers, because they are going to be sharing really good information,” said event organizer Dan Leininger, water conservationist for the Upper Big Blue NRD.

The Project GROW Winter Workshop is free to attend, though registration is requested, either online or by calling (402) 362-6601. In addition to valuable information, the event will also provide continuing education credits for Certified Crop Advisors as well as nitrogen management certification for district growers. (Nitrogen management certification training will also be offered at several different locations, dates, and times through the winter months to accommodate those who require the training but can’t make it to the Winter Workshop. The Project GROW Winter Workshop will be held at the Holthus Convention Center (3130 Holen Ave, York) on December 7. The program will be held from 8:15 to 11:45 a.m. and again from 12:45 to 4:15 p.m. Topics and speakers include:

• “How Will a Developing La Nina Event Influence the 2022 Growing Season?” with Al Dutcher, Nebraska State Climatologist
• “The Benefits of Using Wheat in a Crop Rotation” with Harvey Cool, Associate Agronomist, Bayer Crop Science 
• “Why Use Cover Crops and What is the Best Seed Mix for your Operation?” with Jakin Berns and Davis Behle of Green Cover Seed
• “Healthy, Productive Soils Produce Nutrient Dense Food” with Dr. Jill Clapperton, CEO of Rhizoterra Inc

The event is geared toward district growers but is open toward anyone with an interest in agricultural and environmental topics. All are invited to attend this free educational event.
